Physical Activity – why it is important more
Remaining physically active is vital to health and well-being. Doing physical activities with others helps to keep people motivated and makes it more fun to keep fit. Recent research shows that the epidemic of physical inactivity in the developed world is a major factor in the prevalence of health conditions such as cardiovascular disease (including Stroke, COPD and heart attacks), Type 2 Diabetes, Dementia and some forms of cancer. Shropshire has an aging population and it is vital to keep active in order to enjoy good health into old age. For adults of all ages, the recommendations from the Chief Medical Officer include:
- Some physical activity is better than none, and more physical activity provides greater health benefits. Adults who participate in any amount of physical activity gain some health benefits, including maintenance of good physical and cognitive function.
- Adults should aim to be active daily. Try to do 30 minutes on at least 5 days a week.
- For people who are already regularly active, benefits can be achieved through 75 minutes of vigorous activity spread across the week or a combination of moderate and vigorous activity.
- Adults should also undertake physical activity to improve muscle strength on at least two days a week.
- All adults should minimise the amount of time spent being sedentary (sitting) for extended periods.
In addition, older adults over the age of 65 who may be at risk of falls should incorporate physical activity to improve balance and co-ordination on at least two days a week.
Association of Shropshire Exercise Teachers more
The Association of Shropshire Exercise Teachers (ASET) is a membership organisation open to all exercise providers who work with people with limited mobility or who are taking their first steps back into fitness.
£10 membership fee for ASET will give access to the following benefits:
- Training such as First Aid and Safeguarding Adults Awareness (POVA) training
- Frequent updates on new initiatives in health and physical activity,
- Support with publicity and marketing of your classes
- Occasional opportunities for additional work such as demonstration classes at Senior Safety and Diabetes Awareness events
- Signposting new members to your classes
- Help with arranging holiday cover
- Opportunities to start new classes around the county and to recruit new members to existing classes

Directory of Classes and Activities more
The Wise and Well team at Shropshire RCC holds a database of gentle exercise classes and health walks across the county. We also co-ordinate the Association of Shropshire Exercise Teachers, for teachers who teach classes suitable for sedentary, frail adults and those with limited mobility. These classes are also suitable for people taking their first steps back into fitness.
Some classes, such as Extend, include chair-based exercise. Others such as Otago or Upright & Active, are specifically designed for Falls Prevention. Tai Chi is a form of martial arts which has been shown to also improve strength and balance and help to prevent falls. Zumba Gold is a slower version of the popular Zumba “Ditch the Exercise – join the Party” class based on Latin rhythms. The Health Walks are led by trained volunteers and offer different walks for different levels of ability. They form a sociable chance to make friends in the fresh air.
Joining in a class or a health walk is a great way to meet new friends and develop your fitness.
