Exercise teachers across Shropshire are getting ready to restart classes following confirmation on Monday that coronavirus restrictions will continue to ease.
A further lifting of the rules confirmed by the prime minister means that from Monday 17 May, exercise classes can be taught indoors.
Members of the Association of Shropshire Exercise Teachers (ASET) are particularly keen to get back to teaching so they can continue to work with people who have limited mobility, are older or who may be starting exercise classes for the first time.
The group, which is supported by Shropshire RCC, delivers classes including Extend, Tai Chi, Upright and Active, Postural Stability, Pilates, Zumba Gold and exercise to music.
Wendy Southorn, based in mid-Shropshire, has been teaching for over 10 years. She said: "I am so excited to get back to teaching again! I have really missed meeting up with the lovely people who come to my classes and I know they are all looking forward to seeing each other again too.”
The ASET teachers are following strict Covid safety precautions to ensure everyone can exercise together safely. These will include social distancing, extra hygiene measures and limiting the number of participants, and will apply to everyone - including those who are fully vaccinated.
Due to the restricted numbers allowed in each class, attendees must book in advance with the teacher.
To support exercise teachers in re-opening their classes, a number of small grants have been made available through the Hilton-Jones Trust to help cover initial venue costs.
Susie Hancock, Project Officer for Shropshire RCC, supports ASET. She said: “For the past year we have all been limited in the exercise and activities we can do, which has been particularly difficult for the people who, for various reasons, need support and guidance on the safest way to keep active.
“The lifting of restrictions means that people have the opportunity to attend exercise classes to build up strength and balance again, which will help to minimise risks of falling. It is also a welcome opportunity to exercise in a friendly social environment with real, not virtual, people!”
