The annual Shropshire Boccia Tournament is now underway. Organised by Shropshire RCC, in partnership with the local colleges, this tournament is an opportunity for students to work with older competitors and for the competitors to test their skill against other local Boccia clubs. The second heat was played at Oswestry Leisure Centre on Thursday, 9th October. Eight teams, of three players each, competed for medals and the chance to go through to the County Final. After intense competition, the two teams going through to the final are: Stan's Stars and John's Jewels, both from Llanymynech. The Ruyton Rollers took Bronze medal and last year's Heat winners, Ivor's Idols, came fourth.
The competition was refereed by Sports students from Walford and North Shropshire College with College Principal, Jackie Doodson, presenting the medals. Colin from Ruyton Rollers commented, “The students were exceptionally helpful - they knew the rules, "umpired" impeccably, and were very friendly and chatty.”
Mark Fosbrook, of West Midlands Disability Sports Federation, came to see what was going on. “This is great,” he said. I would love community groups in other counties in the West Midlands to pick up Boccia like this." Maybe one day we can have a West Midlands Tournament?!
Tournament Organiser, Susie Hancock of Shropshire RCC’s Wise & Well Team told us “I am delighted with the Tournament so far. We have more teams in each Heat than last year and the students here at Oswestry, and in the first Heat in Ludlow, have been fantastic.” The next Heat will be in Shrewsbury College on Thursday, 16th October followed by the Final for the County Cup a week later on Thursday, 23rd October. Spectators at both events will be very welcome. To find out more about local Boccia Clubs, contact Susie Hancock at Shropshire RCC on 01743 342160.
