Quest for Shropshire's best village hall quizzers continues
28th Jan, 2019
In the dark, cold months of winter, a battle is quietly raging on in village halls across Shropshire to find the best in the county – at quizzes!
The Shropshire Village Halls Quiz was established over 30 years ago to encourage people to use and enjoy their community buildings, particularly over the winter when there are fewer local activities.
The tournament takes place in halls across Shropshire one Friday a month between October and April, with teams of four representing their village and keen to demonstrate their general knowledge prowess!
The county is split into four divisions based on location, with different halls taking turns to run the event. The teams then come together for the grand final in April.
Carolyn Wilde, from Chapel Lawn, Bucknell, coordinates the tournament with the support of Shropshire RCC.
She said: “The Village Halls Quiz offers people the chance to get together, socialise and get a bit competitive with their fellow quiz-goers!
“But not only that, local communities are supporting each other’s buildings as well as their own, enjoying the spaces and seeing what different village halls in Shropshire have to offer.”
Jan Simpson from the Aston on Clun team said: “It's a fun and friendly way to meet people in your own community and other villages. We have a pool of nine people; it's brought us all closer together and we celebrate the end of each quiz season with a get-together with wine and food at someone's house. Even if we don't win we still have a great time!”
Whittingham-based team member Kath Griffiths said: “It’s great to host the quiz and show what facilities (all very diverse) that our halls offer. On the social side, we all find our level with the questions and can enjoy the friendship that builds up over a year.”
This year’s grand final will take place at Minsterley Village Hall on Friday 5 April. If you are interested in submitting a team for the next tournament, starting in autumn 2019, please email firstname.lastname@example.org
