Messing about on the river
18th Sep, 2015
Members of the Shrewsbury Sight Loss Opportunity Group (SLOG) recently enjoyed a visit to Pengwern Boat Club in Shrewsbury where they were shown how to use the rowing machines before venturing out onto the water. Rachel Whitney, Development Officer for the Sight and Hearing Loss Support Service at Shropshire Rural Communities Charity said 'We had a brilliant afternoon at Pengwern and were very thankful for the opportunity, expertise and encouragement given to us by the dedicated volunteers there who guided us through the experience’.
Shrewsbury SLOG is just one of four groups facilitated by Shropshire RCC. The group is open to anyone who is registered blind or visually impaired and exists to provide opportunities for activities, peer support and learning from interesting speakers. Meeting every 4th Monday in the month from 2-4pm recent sessions have included a visit to Talking Newspapers, bread making with Rob Swift, a game of Boccia and a talk from Sight Loss Shropshire. The other groups meet in Oswestry and Ludlow with an additional cycling group in Shrewsbury which has a trained coach, volunteers to help and specially adapted bikes, tandems & trikes.
Group members very much enjoy the variety that the SLOG groups offer and actively contribute to planning the programme. Membership is completely free although Shropshire RCC may need to occasionally charge a small amount for certain activities. New members are very welcome; if you would like to find out more please call Rachel Whitney on 01743 342163 or email email@example.com
Pengwern Boat Club would also like to encourage people of all disabilities to come along to their Inclusive Rowing sessions which take place on Tuesday mornings. If you would like to find out more please contact 'Pengwern Boat Club' on 01743 362196.
