Funding to support community groups continue beyond Covid-19 crisis

Published: 29th Oct, 2020

Shropshire RCC has been awarded over £30,000 from the National Lottery to work with newly-formed community groups that were set up to offer support during the Coronavirus pandemic.

In a partnership with the Shropshire Infrastructure Partnership, we received £30,033 to help develop the groups so they can provide long term help to the community beyond the crisis.

The funding will be used to run a number of initiatives, including an opportunity for up to 20 organisations to receive mentoring support from leaders who work in charities, social enterprises and businesses in Shropshire.

A training programme of short courses will also be available, covering topics including writing funding applications, adult safeguarding awareness, supporting and managing volunteers, and how to publicise services effectively.

Julia Baron, CEO of Shropshire RCC, said: “At the start of lockdown it was heart-warming to see so many people come together and look out for those who were vulnerable and isolated.

“Through the work we do we know that this support would be of huge benefit to so many people if it continued beyond the pandemic, which is why we’re delighted to receive this funding."

The project has been developed in response to a survey for community groups run by Shropshire RCC in the summer which asked whether they planned to continue to operate, what challenges they faced and what help they might need going forward.

The results revealed that 91% of the respondents plan to continue to operate after the immediate pandemic crisis has passed although of those, 27% have said that they won’t do everything that they have been doing, and 51% feel that they need some help to continue operating.

Julia added: “Our aim is to help build on the foundations of what was created so that groups have the knowledge and confidence to become fully established in the community, becoming a positive, lasting legacy from this challenging time.”
