*** COVID-19 UPDATE ***

Please note, our in-person Sight Loss Opportunity Groups are currently suspended. If you are a member of SLOG or are looking for information and advice in relation to sight loss support, please contact us on 01743 360641 /

There are 2,500 people in Shropshire with sight loss. It is more common than you think.

Shropshire RCC supports people all over the county with a variety of sight loss conditions. People with sight loss can still do most of what other people can, just in a different way. We’re here to make sure you don’t lose your confidence and to help you meet and make new friends.

Sight Loss Supportmore

We provide information and support for people with sight loss living in Shropshire as well as facilitating four Sight Loss Opportunity Groups (or 'SLOG's!) in Shropshire. The SLOG groups offer all kinds of interesting and adventurous activities to encourage people who have sight loss to keep active, stay confident, meet and make new friends and have some fun.

About our groups

Shrewsbury: Meets at University Centre, Guildhall in room SGH201 from 2-4pm on the fourth Monday of the month

Oswestry Library: meets from 10-12 noon on the first Wednesday of the month

Ludlow: meets at St Peter’s Church, Henley Road, from 10.30am - 12.30pm on the second Monday of the month

Cycling & other activities, Sundorne Sports Village - 10.30am -11.30pm on the third Wednesday of the month

A cycle coach is on hand and we have access to a number of adapted bikes as well as Tandems, Tricycles, and two wheel bicycles so there is a bike for everyone. In the winter we often do crown green bowling at the same location, rather than cycling!

James is a SLOG member and cyclist.  Read his story, and watch a video about the impact his cycling has had on his feeling of independence, here.

Groups have a varied and interesting programme throughout the year This includes

  • Speakers who can offer useful information relating to sight loss such as equipment, services and products that can make life easier
  • Talks and demonstrations from interesting and inspiring speakers - most recently the library service and the Fairtrade foundation.
  • Outings to places of interest such as the British Ironworks and a Canal trip both planned for the next few months.
  • Activities such as Ten pin bowling, Walking for Health or rowing for the adventurous!
  • A Christmas lunch out

We have trained volunteer sighted guides and people to help with guide dogs so that everyone can join in.
